Serialization

Also called: Serial Number Assignment
Serialization is the process of assigning a unique serial number to each individual unit of a product, distinguishing it from every other unit even within the same production batch. Unlike batch or lot numbers, which group products manufactured together under a shared identifier, a serial number provides item-level uniqueness, supporting precise traceability, warranty tracking and counterfeit prevention throughout a product's lifecycle.

What is Serialization?

Serialization gives every individual unit of a product its own distinct identifier, so that even two items manufactured on the same line, on the same day, from the same material lot, can still be told apart and tracked independently throughout their lifecycle.

This item-level granularity supports precise tracking of a specific unit's manufacturing history, testing results, ownership and service record, rather than the broader, group-level visibility that batch or lot numbers alone provide.

Serialization is often paired with encoding technologies such as barcodes, 2D data matrix codes or RFID tags, and the serial number is typically registered in a database that ties it to relevant product, manufacturing and, in some industries, distribution information as the item moves through the supply chain.

Why is Serialization important?

Serialization is a key defense against counterfeiting, since a unique, verifiable serial number allows brands, regulators and consumers to confirm a product's authenticity in a way that shared batch or lot numbers cannot.

For high-value or safety-critical products, serialization enables far more precise traceability and recall response, since an issue can be traced to specific individual units rather than requiring action across an entire batch.

How does Serialization work?

A typical serialization process includes:

  1. Serial number generation. Assign a unique serial number to each individual unit, often following a defined numbering scheme.
  2. Encoding. Apply the serial number to the product via barcode, data matrix code, RFID tag or direct marking.
  3. Database registration. Record the serial number in a system connected to relevant manufacturing, quality and distribution data.
  4. Verification. Scan or read the serial number at key points to confirm authenticity and update tracking data.
  5. Lifecycle tracking. Continue capturing events such as shipment, sale, service or return against the specific serial number.
  6. Reporting. Use serialized data to support traceability, warranty and regulatory reporting needs.
