Lot Traceability

Lot traceability is the ability to track a specific lot or batch of raw material, component or finished product forward through production and distribution, and backward from a finished product to the specific material lots used to make it. This bidirectional tracking allows organizations to precisely identify which finished products contain material from a specific lot, or which lots were used in a specific finished product, supporting quality investigations, recalls and regulatory compliance.

What is Lot Traceability?

Lot traceability connects a specific lot of material, whether raw material, a purchased component or a finished product, to everything upstream and downstream of it. Forward traceability answers "where did this lot go?" while backward traceability answers "what went into this specific product?"

Achieving reliable lot traceability requires capturing lot information consistently at every relevant point: incoming receipt of purchased materials, consumption during production, and recording of finished goods and shipments, so that a continuous chain connects raw material lots to specific finished units.
